Silence yourself: Why meditation is a must!

Me meditating Aug 2014Whenever I mutter the word meditation, people glaze over or go scrambling for the door. What is it about meditation that freaks people out? There have certainly been times for me that I have put meditation on the back burner and made all sorts of excuses … the best one being I’m just too busy.

Recently I delved into why I have avoided meditation in the past and have asked others for what prevents them from having a daily meditation practice. These are the most common reasons why we avoid/resist meditation:

  • I want to meditate but I’m not sure how. I was raised Christian and find it hard to transition from prayer to meditation.
  • I have a 4 year old running around almost all day and work full time.
  • Sometimes just feel that everything is fine and taken care of.
  • I don’t have time.
  • If I have a little time, I worry during meditation that I’ll then be behind on my next task.
  • I’m too tired and will fall asleep.

I have found that one reason why meditation is avoided is that we are uncomfortable with the silence, uneasy about being with our own thoughts, and we are nervous about what we might “hear” during meditation. In a chaotic world, we have become numb to silence and meditation can take us into that discomfort zone of quiet.

But meditation is what can pull us out of discomfort. These are just some of the many benefits of a daily meditation practice that I have personally experienced:

  • Lowers stress
  • Calms the mind for clearer thinking
  • Helps you process difficult decisions
  • Makes you more compassionate
  • Allows for more restful sleep
  • You feel healthier and vibrants
  • Opens intuition so that you make good life decisions
  • Gives you creative ideas
  • Stays with you throughout the day for more thoughtful, and less stressful, interactions
  • And it positively impacts the brain to allow it to rest (check out this article about it).

When I do not meditate, I can feel the difference in how I go about my day, how I interact with people, and how I respond to stress. If you Google “benefits of daily meditation” you will find numerous articles expounding the benefits, including this one from the Huffington Post

You do not have to be a Zen Master in order to successfully meditate. Some techniques encourage you to get to a place where you have no thoughts, but I find that is too stressful for most people because they experience monkey mind where their thoughts bounce around like a monkey. So here are a couple of simple techniques that you can do to meditate each day without stressing yourself.

  • Sit comfortably, palms on your lap, spine straight, and just focus on inhaling for a count of 5 and exhaling for a count of 5. I like to use a technique from one of my advanced healing classes where I visualize inhaling up the energy of the core of the earth up the back of my spine and up to the heavens, and then exhaling the energy of the heavens down the front of my spine to the earth, and repeat. Ten repetitions of this and I can guarantee that you will be relaxed.
  • Sit comfortably, palms on your lap, spine straight, and focus on relaxing every part of your body starting with the top of your head all the way down to your feet. Give yourself 5-10 seconds (or more) per area where you invite it to relax.
  • Sit comfortably, palms on your lap, spine straight, and go on a mental visualization journey to a serene location. When you arrive at the location, sit, enjoy the surroundings (with all senses) and then see who arrives (it could be people, animals, spirits). Then just ask “what do I need know?” and wait for answers to come to mind.
  • Engage in a walking meditation. Leave the ear buds, music and smart phone at home. Just walk (preferably in a quiet location), pay attention to how your feet touch the ground, look at the trees, animals, sky, and just soak in your environment which will calm your mind. If you have a dog, do this technique while also watching how your dog responds to the environment.
  • Listen to soft meditation music, or binaural beat music. My favorites are: Crystal Sonic music, HemiSync music, Wayne Dyer’s I Am meditations, or if you want a more intensive long-term program I recommend Holosync.
  • And when you meditate I like to hold a crystal (usually my Brandberg or Ajoite), sit at one of my crystal grids to take in its energy, sit before a spiritual alter, diffuse essential oils or burn candles and anything else to enhance your meditation experience.

You can really meditate anywhere without detection. At home or walking in a quiet location is best, but you can also meditate at your desk (close your office door or put up a sign on your cubical that you are focusing and cannot be disturbed), go outside and find a quiet location, on an airplane (I do this a lot), or in your car (when it is parked).

If you start with 5 minutes of meditation daily and work yourself up to an amount of time that works for you, you will notice how you begin to interact and live in the world differently. This does not need to be complicated; just find a method and a practice that works for you and stick to it!!!

I would love to hear from you about what your favorite meditation practice is, so leave a comment!

10 Wellness Tools every home should have

Coffee table crystalsThe more I learn about various healing and wellness modalities, the more I am impressed with how beautifully they work together. For instance, I love combining crystals with Reiki sessions, essential oils with Integrated Energy Therapy sessions, crystal singing bowls with color therapy, and so on. Why not pile on the energy frequencies so that they work together, right?

Someone recently asked me “If I could only have 10 wellness tools in my tool kit, what should I have?” Ooooooo, I love questions like that. So I thought about my go-to everyday must-have wellness tools (tools that do not necessarily require a lengthy training class or attunements) and this is what I cannot live without!

Front door crystals

Five crystals that every home should have!

  • Amethyst = this is the master healer that is beautiful and makes a great ornamental piece in the home, it is soothing, a natural tranquilizer, balances highs and lows, lessens sadness and anger, it is protective, cleansing, helps with mental focus, eases insomnia, opens intuition and so much more.
  • Black Tourmaline = this is the ultimate protection crystal for placement in front of computers, televisions, internet routers, anything electrical and even at your front door to block unwanted energies. It is grounding, removes negative energy, lessens stress and tension and strengthens the immune system.
  • Clear Quartz = this is also a master healer that amplifies thought and other energies including other crystals, it is an overall “feel good” crystal and makes a room feel clean and vibrant.
  • Citrine = this is the stone of happiness and abundance, a powerful cleanser, protective, makes a room feel like it’s full of sunshine, and boosts creativity. Place this around your house to draw in all types of abundance.
  • Rose Quartz = this is the crystal of loving energy so it is wonderful around pets who are not getting along, people who are stressed, angry and not getting along, and it’s a stone of harmony and peace that radiates a beautiful energy of tranquility.

Top 5 oils

Five Young Living pure therapeutic grade essential oils that every home should have (especially for use in a diffuser)!

  • Joy = the name says it all … this oil boosts your spirits, puts a smile on your face, makes a home feel joyful, opens up energy blocks that need releasing, and helps during grief.
  • Lavender = this oil truly does everything from supporting your skin to helping you relax. Be sure that you are only using true 100% Lavender oil, like Young Living because there is a lot of adulterated Lavender (and other oils) out there.
  • Peace & Calming = this is a must for diffusing in a home every single day. It quickly brings on a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Thieves = this is my go to during the winter because it supports your immune system.
  • And PanAway = amazing support for muscles and joints.

When you experience these crystals and oils, individually or together, you will feel a sensation (a vibrational energy) very quickly (or once you can quiet yourself and tune in). When you place crystals in your home and/or diffuse essential oils, your home will simply feel better. Everyone who comes to my home instantly comments that it feels light, happy, clean and healthy. I can thank my numerous crystals and frequently essential oil diffusing for that!

I would love to hear what your favorite wellness tools are and let me know how my recommendations work for you!

Changing course

Have you ever been in a situation where you were really clear on what you wanted, the path that you were going to take, and the end result? But then after some time of walking down this path. you found yourself feeling that the path was not right?

It’s happened to me and it’s happened to almost everyone I know. Life is not stagnant and if you are not changing you are not growing; and if you’re not growing, you are dying. So changing your path is very normal and very healthy. It also shows great strength.

For those who consciously work with the Law of Attraction, we laser focus our desires on the path and end result. But whenever we get “that feeling” that something is not right, or maybe too many issues and roadblocks pop up along the way to where it is more struggle than progress, it is absolutely okay to change course. Actually, it is the BEST course of action to change than to keep forcing something that is not fitting.

When you sense a course change is needed, you may wonder whether you are sending a confusing vibration to the Universe when you change course. This is especially true if you have spent months and years focusing on the path. And if you hop off of the path you may not immediately find the correct one, right? That can cause fear of what lies ahead.

What I have learned over the years is that when you know the path is not right (you feel it in your heart and gut even though your brain is forcing you to march forward), it is not important at that moment to know where the right path is. What is important is that you stop your energy from staying on the wrong path. So this can be as simple as saying “This is not the right path for me. I now change how I spend time, energy, thoughts and feelings to seeing the correct path and staying open to receiving guidance on where I need to be.”

Thinking

So when you get a feeling that something is not right, that is your intuition giving you an early warning signal. Most often that signal is ignored and people keep charging ahead down the old path. They find that the old path is more difficult and tiring than initially expected. This is because your intuition is telling you that the path is not right and is trying to get you to take action to change course. When we don’t change course, we encounter uneasy feelings and difficulties. Listen to your feelings and your intuition and it will always guide you to the right path.

Where energy goes, energy flows is what the Law of Attraction tells us. So when you state to the Universe, you stop the flow of energy to the old path and allow yourself to be re-directed. You will then find that you start taking action towards the new path, even though it may not make sense initially. Visualize how you have been rowing your little boat upstream and struggling the entire way; then visualize letting go of the oars and you let the river redirect your boat. Do not force the re-direct; let it naturally happen. Be open and watch for messages.

Come alive

Here are some handy tools to help you tap into your intuition and listen to messages about your path:

  • Crystals: Amethyst, Azurite, Sodalite, Sugilite help strengthen intuition (we all have intuition, sometimes it just needs a little exercise)
  • Young Living Essential Oils: Acceptance, Believe, Envision, Harmony, Into the Future, Release, Surrender, or Transformation (apply any or all of these oils over your heart, to your third eye, on your wrists)
  • Affirmations: I am open to being placed on the correct path for my highest good.
  • Vision board: Update your vision board by removing any reference to the old path and post things that relate to changing.
