Essential oils when grieving

Note: This essential oil protocol is NOT intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease related to grieving. I am sharing what helped me in my grieving self-care practice.

From December 2019 until March 12, 2022, I was in the prolonged and anticipatory grieving process of losing my mom to Alzheimer’s. Here’s the short story.

My mom had another fall, the visit to the emergency room accelerated her dementia, they told us she was dying and had only days to live (that was a shock to us), she went into assisted living for what we thought would be a short time. Fast forward 3 months and the lockdown happened in March 2020 and my dad and I were excluded from seeing her and even standing outside of her window to wave to her. Her dementia progressed rapidly until we moved her to a different assisted living facility where we could visit her daily. Fast forward 26 months where little by little each day she slipped away until her passing on March 12, 2022.

Grieving occurred every minute of this process and was prolonged because the mom I had before her final fall was not the mom that I watched decline for over 2 years. There are 5 times that we were told that she had days to live, only to have her bounce back. She contracted “the virus” and we thought she would not make it, but she physically recovered (not mentally). The rollercoaster of she’s dying to she bounced back was hard to handle. It was horrible watching her not eat for weeks and eventually slip away. I am thankful that she recognized me and my dad even in the end, that she was peaceful and in no pain.

We all grieve differently

We all grieve in different ways and on different time lines in reaction to a loss.

Mourning is the outward expression of a loss, grief is the internal suffering we experience.

You can go back and forth in the stages of grieving. What is important is not to linger in grief because prolonged grief settles into the physical body in the lung meridian and heart chakra. We have all heard of a spouse who became ill after the prolonged illness of their loved one, and sometimes passing shortly after their loved one was gone.

Grieving can occur from:

  • Loss of a loved one (person or pet)
  • Loss of a pregnancy
  • Loss of health
  • Loss of a job
  • Loss of relationships
  • Loss of a home
  • Loss of a lifestyle
  • Loss of freedom
  • Loss of your world as it was

Your physical and emotional health before the grief incident can determine how long your grief process will happen. Grief meets you where you are and progresses from there.

Prolonged grieving can result in:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD
  • Guilt
  • Isolation
  • Numbing behaviors
  • Numb emotions
  • Eating disorders (not eating or junk eating)
  • Concentration problems
  • Addictions
  • Low energy
  • No desire to do things once enjoyed
  • Heart attacks
  • Unhealthy behaviors

You will know that you have come out on the other side of grieving when:

  • You accept the loss
  • You no longer feel physical and emotional pain from the loss
  • You have adjusted to a “new normal”
  • You have moved on and do not feel guilty being happy

My grieving protocol

I knew that my mom was on the dementia path and it is the primary reason that I left my legal career in the DC area and moved back home to Michigan in March 2015. I wanted to be there for her and my dad as she progressed.

In July 2019 I created an essential oil protocol to support the grieving process in response to so many friends losing beloved pets. I had several friends test the protocol and received feedback. I soon found that it was helpful in our rapidly changing world that started in March 2020. And then it was helpful for me and my dad during this prolonged time with my mom.

This protocol meets you where you are in the stage of grieving.

This protocol is NOT intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease; it is a protocol that addresses the vibrational energy of grieving to help soothe what you are feeling and support you through the back-and-forth stages.

For me, my grieving was long-term the entire time my mom was in assisted living. That time provided me and my dad the opportunity to adjust to a “new normal.” With her peaceful passing, I found peace. Many people ask me how I’m doing and I’m actually doing well. It was the past 2+ years that were very hard.

I now realize how prolonged grieving impacted my energy these past 2 years. I am the sort of person who just keeps going with a happy face no matter what is going on. I was able to keep up with the work I enjoy in my 3 businesses, but much else beyond that I did not have the energy. I found myself visiting my healing location at Lake Michigan frequently (on average every other week throughout the year). I craved the energy of the water and waves and could not get enough of it. Listen to those cravings (when they healthy).

I engaged in extreme self-care and prioritized keeping myself healthy and well. Essential oils, crystals, healthy food, lake time, and restricting my time to supportive positive people helped me greatly. It is important to take care of yourself first and foremost because others depend on you. I am still in the process of recovering my energy and do not feel bad when I say no to things I once enjoyed. Give yourself permission to say no.

I hope this protocol will help you, like it helped me and my dad, during the inevitable grieving that we all experience at one or more points in our lifetime. Being proactive in your self-care is one of the most important things you can do for yourself, your loved ones, and everyone around you.

Call on your angels

Do you believe that you have a guardian angel? Do you believe that there are angels that you can call on to provide support and protection when you need it? Most people have not thought about angels or may be dismissive of them. Yet most religious traditions talk about the work of angels.

Disclaimer: This post is discussing angels in a non-religious manner. Speaking to or working with angels is not intended to intervene with your connection to your Higher Source; rather, connecting with angels is a way to enhance your spiritual connection.

 Whether you believe in angels or not, they are at work everywhere and for everyone. Each person has one or more personal guardian angels. There are many nonphysical things in life that we do not understand and humans tend to be dismissive of anything that cannot be proven through a scientific test or seeing with your own eyes. And that is a very limited way to live. But if you open your vision (your eye sight as well as your inner sight), you may realize that you have had angel encounters.

Angel encounters come in many different forms. You may shift your driving down a different road and avoid a big accident; you may hear a voice telling you to stop or move; you may feel a warm embrace during a moment of grief or sadness; or you may actually have a physical encounter with an angel. Let me tell you about one of my encounters.

SedonaIn January 2012, I was visiting Sedona, Arizona. While sitting on a hillside looking over the valley in one of the energy vortices, I was thinking of things in my life that needed to move on and other things that I wanted to bring in. While sitting there, I did not see anyone else on the hillside. Yet out of nowhere, a man in his mid-60’s appeared, walking with a stick and whistling. He was truly the happiest person I had seen. He walked directly to me and asked me if I was enjoying the energy of the vortex. I replied that I was. He then told me to take anything that I no longer wanted, old energy or old situations, and send them into the vortex. He said that the vortex would transform the energy and send back what I am ready to receive. It was like a prophet was speaking to me.

He then handed me a red rock in the shape of a heart. I collect rocks and crystals in the shape of hearts. Did he know this? He then smiled, turned and walked away whistling. I looked down at the rock and then back up to thank him and he was gone. It was only 1-2 seconds that I looked at the rock and he literally disappeared on the side of the hill. What I have described is a classic physical angel encounter.

Angels come to us to offer wisdom that we are ready to hear, to give us gifts, and to help and guide us when we ask for help. We always have free will. But you will notice that when you ask for help, it will come to you. And when you take the guidance, everything works out for the best.

Here are a few angels that you can call upon when you need guidance or help:

  • Archangel Ariel – for manifesting and nature
  • Archangel Azrael – for comfort during grief
  • Archangel Chamuel – for career and life purpose, when you’re fearful
  • Archangel Gabriel – for direction and creativity
  • Archangel Haniel – for grace
  • Archangel Michael – when you need protection and courage
  • Archangel Raphael – for physical healing
  • Archangel Uriel – for harmony and problem solving
  • Archangel Zadkiel – for forgiveness

The Mind-Body Connection

I love it when “modern” medicine catches up with what Eastern philosophies have known for thousands of years … the mind impacts our physical body. Over the weekend a magazine caught my eye at Whole Foods. It’s called What Doctor’s Don’t Tell You. For the past 8 years, I have switched to all holistic/naturopathic doctors (as well as energy healing) and have learned so much about what those doctor’s believe about how to keep the body healthy.

In the November issue there is an article called “Living the Dream” by Dr. Lissa Rankin. That caught my eye because I have a wall hanging at my front door that says the same thing. The article was amazing. Click here to download a full copy.

Living the DreamThe article addressed how our bodies are under chronic stress due to not living a life that brings joy and fulfillment. It compared people who eat healthy, exercise, avoid addictions and work with doctor’s to optimize their health to people who eat junk food, do not exercise, yet are physically healthier than their “healthy” counterparts. How is that? The difference was in how they felt about their life. People who are stressed about their job, are miserable/unfulfilled in their relationships, lonely, scared about their future and finances, and/or depressed will have overall lower physical health. When the body is stressed, it cannot relax. And only a relaxed body can repair itself.

Living the life that you want is as important as how you care for your physical body. So I would like you to take a few minutes to write down your answers to these questions:

  • Is anything keeping you from being authentically you? If so, what is holding you back.
  • What is missing from your life?
  • If you were granted one wish to change anything in your life, what would it be?

We all have some aspect of our life that we would like to change. But what causes chronic stress o the body is having multiple aspects of your life that frankly make you miserable. For example, if you do not like your job, you likely spend half of your waking life doing something that makes you unhappy. Then if you come home to loneliness or a relationship that is not healthy, that’s an additional stressor. This chronic stress that puts stress on the body because you cannot get away from it. And stress on the body causes a host of physical problems.

If you are struggling with a physical issue, write down the answer to these questions:

  • What do you think is at the root of your illness?
  • What does your body need in order to heal?

When you make choices to reduce your stress and follow a dream, you fill your body with relaxation hormones rather than stress-inducing hormones. Our bodies are built to handle occasional situations of stress, not the chronic stress that we tolerate everyday. Chronic stressors such as work/financial stress, loneliness, difficult relationships, or depression cause our brain to believe that we are under attack. So it physically responds causing stress on the nervous system and your organs. Basically, we age faster when we’re under chronic stress and unhealthy cells develop.

It is so important that you take steps to live a happy life. You were not put on this planet to be unhappy. You have the ability to create the life that you want, one step at a time. One simple step is to engage in quiet time and relaxing breathing techniques every day (no exceptions). You have to give yourself downtime (in addition to a good nights sleep). Power of the Purr

PurrrrThis blog is dedicated to my cat peeps! Did you know that a cat’s purr is healing? Yes, you heard me …. a cat’s purr is healing!

If you have ever enjoyed the company of a feline, you have invariably been lured into a smile simply by the sound of their purr. That little rumbling motor that seems to consume a cat’s entire body and often makes them vibrate with happiness. This purr has healing ability!!! (Don’t stop reading because I’m going to get a little sciencey on you!)

Most people can agree that sound is very healing, right? Many of us listen to music to help us relax; we dance and exercise to music; music helps you to “get in the mood” (whatever mood you want to get into … giggle); we are mesmerized by the sound of waves rippling to shore, wind howling through the trees, and fire crackling. Even the little water fountain on my desk helps me to stay balanced throughout the day.

Purr quoteIn the book Vibrational Healing through the Chakras, Joy Gardner tells us that our bodies and emotions have a vibrational energy and are a source of electrical energy. All forms of matter (atomic and subatomic particles) vibrate; German physicist Max Planck proved this. This is what science has told us about vibration and frequency:

  • The heart has the frequency of 225 Hz
  • Brain waves vibrate at a frequency up to 200 Hz
    • Beta is waking consciousness and has a frequency of 15-40 Hz
    • Alpha is a relaxed state and has a frequency of 9-14 Hz
    • Theta is deep meditation, hypnosis, visualization and deep healing and has a frequency of 5-8 Hz
    • Delta is REM sleep with a frequency of .5 – 4 Hz
    • Epsilon is right-left hemisphere syncing and accessing great inspiration and has a frequency below .5 Hz
    • Gamma involves all senses converging for higher awareness at a frequency of 40-100 Hz (this involves shamanic/mystical experiences)
    • Lambda is the state of ecstasy and is up to 200 Hz
  • The Earth vibrates at 7.83 Hz. This is because lightening can circle the circumference of the Earth 7.83 times in one second, thus this is the charge for the Earth. There are 1000 lightening storms every second to keep this rate consistent. When our body can vibrate at that rate, we experience healing. Healers and mystics typically have a frequency of 7.8 Hz.

We know that light, sound, smell, plants, foods, essential oils can all be measured in frequencies. Our skin, sense of smell and taste are sensitive to frequencies of vibration. And when we have physical and emotional ailments, our body vibrates at a lower rate. Good stuff, eh?

Animal sounds have a frequency. Whale and elephant sounds resonate at a frequency of 15-35 Hz (which can stimulate alpha brain activity). Dolphins have a frequency of 3-500 Hz (the clicking sound) and 2000-80000 HZ (for their whistles). And (drum roll please) …. a cat’s purr has a frequency of 25-150 Hz.

A cat’s purr is within the ideal range for improving bone density and to promote overall healing and wellness. This range is also within the Gamma and Lambda frequencies. Maybe this is why cat’s often have a look of ecstasy on their face!

Cat’s purr not only when they are happy and well, but when they are ill and in pain. They purr when ill because the frequency of the purr helps them to feel better. So now imagine you are feeling under the weather, depressed, lonely, anxious, or struggling with a serious illness. One of the best healing methods (other than laughter) is to be near a cat!! This is why when you are not well, your cat will gravitate to you and be near you. They are natural healers and they know that their mere presence (or should I say, purrsence) will help you! I have experienced this on countless occasions where my cats lay on my bed, encircling me, when I do not feel well. That is the ultimate house call!

Let me heal youSo the next time you do not feel well (physically, emotionally, mentally or spiritually), grab your cat and give them a big smooch and a hug (with their purrmission, of course). If you do not have a cat, find a friend or family member with a cat and hang out with them. Or even go to your local animal shelter to simply spend time with some homeless cats. You will feel better, and so will they!
