Widen your perspective, receive more

Create a visionI was driving home after a beautiful walk along the river on my favorite campus (Michigan State) when I was scanning my SiriusXM radio and stopped on a channel. It was a talk about widening our containers, our perspective, so that we can receive more.

This message really struck a cord with me because all year (and for the past few years) I’ve been widening my perspective and experiencing the growing pains and joys that come with it. Widening your container or perspective is about looking at where you are in all aspects of your life (personal, spiritual, finance, work, health, etc.) and then reaching further to make it even better. It’s proactive rather than reactive. So if you are sick and tired of being sick and tired, do one thing today to improve your physical wellbeing and keep doing it. If you’re fed up with your boss/job, then take a step towards finding and doing your passion career and do it everyday. If you’re financially or spiritually broke, make a decision to learn what you need to do to become financially or spiritually abundant and keep doing it. Widening the container is not a one time event, it’s a process. The process is called life. Yet I find that most people (and I’ve been there at times) are satisfied with being dissatisfied. And that’s not right.

But here’s the glitch about that container: When we ask for more in our lives but don’t have the space to accommodate more, we end up pushing away the exact thing that we want. What???? We don’t do this intentionally; it’s a subconscious reaction built on a belief system that we’re not entitled to more than what we have. Everyday we push our desires and dreams away because we often go through life thinking small, not believing that we deserve more than what we have, and being taught to be grateful for what we have (and hence, don’t ask for more). Who came up with those crappy rules? Your life and what’s in it is exactly as big as your container and what you can fit in it. Small perspective creates a small container and a small life. A big container is filled with an expansive perspective of all that is possible and creates a big glorious life.

But in order to bring in something new, we may need to make space for it. So that usually means that something has to go. Most people don’t want to give up anything even if it’s something toxic; they just want to keep adding in more stuff in hopes of covering it up. I call this Toxic Hoarding. To make space, we need to eliminate what isn’t working for us anymore so that we can add what we really want.

You don’t have to give up anything huge or life altering. It could simply be that you spend less time on Facebook (which has been such a depressing energy drain for me lately), less time gossiping, less time watching reality TV, less time with energy draining people, friends and activities. It’s about learning to say no, staying focused on what you want in your life and avoiding a life that is on auto pilot with mind-numbing activities! Or maybe you need a life altering change so you start to reduce the number of hours working for a toxic job, you leave the toxic job knowing that when a space is created it must be filled, you walk away from a relationship that no longer serves you, or you start to do something for yourself everyday that promotes well-being, purpose and abundance in your life.

So what does your container look like? Is it big enough to hold all of your dreams and goals. If it is, you’re not dreaming big enough. If it’s not, start to clean out your container and start to stretch your dreams and goals beyond your comfort zone. You know that I’m all about tools to help with changing belief systems and supporting change. So here are my top 5 picks:

Finding Om

Do you have a difficult time turning your thoughts off at night? Do you wake up in the middle of the night worrying about something? Do you multi-task throughout the day and then feel exhausted? Are you becoming forgetful? If you answer yes to any of these, it’s time for you to find your Om!

Om is the most sacred mantra of them all. It is the sound of the Universe, and the sound resonates with the third eye chakra. I have found that the sound resonates with all of the chakras and provides deep healing.

It is important that we find time everyday to quiet our mind. When we don’t, we lead a frantic life! (Trust me, I speak from experience). Meditation unnerves many people, primarily because they cannot quiet their mind. They end up reciting their to do list in their mind, or listening to the judgmental ego and then give up on the process. But if you continue with it, even for just 5 minutes a day, you will quiet that busy mind and begin to tap in to your inner voice. Saying Om out loud will help you ease into a meditative state.

But if we do not give our mind rest each day, it will grow tired and stop being efficient. You may think that sleeping quiets the mind, but it doesn’t. The mind will slow it down, but is active at night. Without fail we give our bodies time to rest, so we need to give our mind time to rest.

When you schedule quiet time each day and calm your mind, reciting Om will provide immediate physical, mental and emotional calmness. You will tap into your higher self and begin to hear your inner voice that is encouraging, supportive and will never lead you down a wrong path. And you will begin to manifest better.

So this week, I am encouraging you to give meditation a chance. If you’ve never tried it, or tried it and felt unnerved, just find 5 minutes each day this week, go to a quiet place, get comfortable, close your eyes, breathe deeply and verbally recite Ommmmmm. Play some soothing meditation music to help with the silence (I have some of my favorite meditation CDs listed on my Recommended Products page). Keep at it and with each day it will get easier. The health benefits of meditating and reciting Om are enormous. No one wants to lead an unhealthy life; meditation and reciting Om is such a simple thing to do. It costs no money and takes very little time. And no matter how busy you are, you can find 5 minutes every day.

The Mind-Body Connection

I love it when “modern” medicine catches up with what Eastern philosophies have known for thousands of years … the mind impacts our physical body. Over the weekend a magazine caught my eye at Whole Foods. It’s called What Doctor’s Don’t Tell You. For the past 8 years, I have switched to all holistic/naturopathic doctors (as well as energy healing) and have learned so much about what those doctor’s believe about how to keep the body healthy.

In the November issue there is an article called “Living the Dream” by Dr. Lissa Rankin. That caught my eye because I have a wall hanging at my front door that says the same thing. The article was amazing. Click here to download a full copy.

Living the DreamThe article addressed how our bodies are under chronic stress due to not living a life that brings joy and fulfillment. It compared people who eat healthy, exercise, avoid addictions and work with doctor’s to optimize their health to people who eat junk food, do not exercise, yet are physically healthier than their “healthy” counterparts. How is that? The difference was in how they felt about their life. People who are stressed about their job, are miserable/unfulfilled in their relationships, lonely, scared about their future and finances, and/or depressed will have overall lower physical health. When the body is stressed, it cannot relax. And only a relaxed body can repair itself.

Living the life that you want is as important as how you care for your physical body. So I would like you to take a few minutes to write down your answers to these questions:

  • Is anything keeping you from being authentically you? If so, what is holding you back.
  • What is missing from your life?
  • If you were granted one wish to change anything in your life, what would it be?

We all have some aspect of our life that we would like to change. But what causes chronic stress o the body is having multiple aspects of your life that frankly make you miserable. For example, if you do not like your job, you likely spend half of your waking life doing something that makes you unhappy. Then if you come home to loneliness or a relationship that is not healthy, that’s an additional stressor. This chronic stress that puts stress on the body because you cannot get away from it. And stress on the body causes a host of physical problems.

If you are struggling with a physical issue, write down the answer to these questions:

  • What do you think is at the root of your illness?
  • What does your body need in order to heal?

When you make choices to reduce your stress and follow a dream, you fill your body with relaxation hormones rather than stress-inducing hormones. Our bodies are built to handle occasional situations of stress, not the chronic stress that we tolerate everyday. Chronic stressors such as work/financial stress, loneliness, difficult relationships, or depression cause our brain to believe that we are under attack. So it physically responds causing stress on the nervous system and your organs. Basically, we age faster when we’re under chronic stress and unhealthy cells develop.

It is so important that you take steps to live a happy life. You were not put on this planet to be unhappy. You have the ability to create the life that you want, one step at a time. One simple step is to engage in quiet time and relaxing breathing techniques every day (no exceptions). You have to give yourself downtime (in addition to a good nights sleep).
