Did you know that your belief system creates your current reality? What you believe is what you create. When I first heard this about 8 years ago, I thought “holy schizzle, no wonder I’m not happy with parts of my life.” Since then I have found this concept so fascinating that I have been delving into research and books about beliefs while doing my own excavation of beliefs. The book Biology of Belief by Bruce Lipton is a book that I highly recommend. It will start you on your belief-busting adventure.
In a nutshell, beliefs control our genes and DNA blueprint. So our cells are programmed with beliefs. Most people are shocked to hear that and instantly go into denial. It is a pretty heavy weight to know that you are actually in control of your life, rather than genetics and the world in general being in control.
How does this play out? If you believe that you will be overweight because you have overweight family members, guess who will be overweight? If you have people who tell you that you are genetically pre-destined to have a certain disease, guess who is thinking about that (consciously and subconsciously) but then surprised when that disease manifests? If you believe that you are not successful and money is hard to come by, guess who will be struggling in work and finances their entire life? If you believe that relationships are difficult, then guess who will struggle to authentically connect to others? Does any of this sound familiar? Am I touching a cord yet?
Our beliefs are programmed into us very early in life (around age 6!!!) before we have a chance to say “I don’t like that belief so I’m not taking it on.” Most of our beliefs are from well-intended family, friends, schools, churches, community and society influences. With the onslaught of social media, I feed terrible for the kids today who are growing up bombarded by other people’s messages. These influences are often very negative, limiting, and are meant to keep us safe. In essence, they are meant to keep us small and from living large.
Safe = status quo = stagnation = not living your true life path = unhappiness
The other day, I saw a belief system in action and I pushed back. Someone cautioned me about going too fast on something. This person knows me fairly well, but they did not know the facts of the situation and they clearly do not know that when I have my mind set on something, I go for it! I’m not careless and I give great thought to things. But I go for it and do not let fear interject because I listen to my intuition. When I receive numerous signs to proceed I follow them and it always ends up great! What I saw was this person trying to impose their limiting belief system on me. Uh … no thanks! And when I thought about it, this person has a nice life but there are financial/health/relationship struggles. So why would I want that?
Everyday we receive limiting beliefs from other people. Being aware is critical to maintaining our own healthy belief system. This recent encounter impressed upon me (again) that we all need to get our own belief system in check and clean up what should not be there. When you analyze what your beliefs are about money, career, relationships, family, health, spirituality, and more, you will learn a lot about yourself and you will learn if you are holding onto beliefs that are not in your best interest. You may find that some beliefs imprinted in you by others are actually beliefs that you want to keep. But it is very important that we dig deep and find beliefs that are not in our best interests. These beliefs are like having a nagging person constantly belittling us, wearing us down, having us live a small life, and never taking any chances. For if we never take chances, we stop growing. And if we continue to allow outdated beliefs from others control our lives, we might as well sleepwalk through life because we certainly are not living our life.
So I encourage you to read up on beliefs (I highly recommend Biology of Belief) and you will notice that things start to shift, you may feel less fear and more courage, you start noticing signs and taking action on them, and then your life starts to shape into a life that you actually want! It’s amazing when it happens. And with 2015 being so fresh … go for it!
