How resilient are you?

Sturdy root and earth chakrasThis Friday will be the 10th anniversary that I left Michigan and moved to Virginia for employment. It’s a bittersweet day that fills me with conflicting emotions. Let me share a little of why October 18, 2003 was a bittersweet day.

The long story is contained in my first book (How Shelter Pets are Brokered for Experimentation: Understanding Pound Seizure) if you want the juicy details. The short story is this:

I was a very successful and highly respected prosecuting attorney in my home state of Michigan with a promising future. It was my dream job, although it was filled with incredible stress, a few death threats, and constantly viewing the worst of humanity. In early 2003, I exposed some misconduct at the local animal shelter about how they were selling animals to research. Rather than investigate what I had uncovered, my boss turned on me, tried to get criminal charges on me, and publicly accused me in the media of the worst thing that I can be accused of … being unethical and dishonest. He openly threatened me, I was terrified to be in my own home, and I became a recluse for months out of fear. When my boss ordered me to “take back” what I had uncovered in order to keep my job, I held true to my principles and what I knew and walked away. He then proceeded to block me from any prosecution job in the state. Eight months later, I was relieved when I was offered a position as a national trainer with a nonprofit organization that trains prosecutors. I would be able to stay in my chosen legal field, avoid the face-to-face dealings with criminals and death threats, and teach others (which I love to do). But I had to move to Virginia and leave my life behind.

It was traumatic leaving my beautiful house, my family, my friends, my chosen profession, and everything that was home behind. Life was a blur and I’m still not sure how I went through it. In the grand scale of traumatic events, it may not seem traumatic, but at the time it was my living nightmare.

For 3 years, I could barely embrace my new life. I simply was not resilient. My energy was stuck in my old life and was refusing to move forward. I just worked, went home, and wanted to hide. At the time, I had never heard of the Law of Attraction or energy healing. Gosh, I could have used both of those then because I know that I would have bounced back a lot faster.

So why am I sharing this? I certainly do not want to revive the energy of what I experienced 10 years ago. But I think it is worth having a discussion about resiliency.

We all know people who have endured horrific traumas and appear to bounce back quickly and embrace life. We also know people who crumble into despair with objectively minimal bumps in life. Some people have the fight instinct, others the flight instinct. I had the frozen instinct. On the outside, I was composed, professional, did not stoop to the level of my boss, ended up mobilizing a community to stop the selling of animals to research at the animal shelter (which then became a state-wide movement that still continues today), and appeared to be handling the situation with grace. On the inside, I was broken and stuck. I was unable to move with the ebb and flows of the change because the change was so unexpected and excessive. But I instinctively knew that I needed to “fake it ‘til you make it” and keeping a positive attitude outwardly would help me feel better. Gee, that’s what we’re taught to do to manifest what we want with the Law of Attraction.

Resiliency is the key to how we handle trauma and even the day-to-day changes we’re experiencing now. Having a balanced and grounded Earth and Root Chakra helps. So if you haven’t been resilient in the past, how can you become more resilient? Here are a few suggestions that worked for me:

  • Never stop looking for the good that can come out of a bad situation;
  • Let yourself go through the grieving process, do not bottle up your feelings;
  • Confide in people you can trust who will also make sure you do not dwell on the trauma;
  • Remember that the Universe/Source/God has a plan for you and even when bad things happen, there is something for us to learn;
  • Call upon your Angels for guidance and help (they are always there, you just need to ask);
  • Read Law of Attraction books (or take one of my upcoming online classes) to learn how to pull yourself out of the trauma; and
  • Gift yourself energy healing sessions (as many as it takes) to pull the trauma energy out of your energy field.

When I look back, I wish things would have been different, but know that I was being shifted onto a bigger path to make more of a difference. I don’t miss the death threats, the stress of constant trials, or the toll the stress was taking on me.

Had I stayed where I was, it would have been comfortable. But I doubt that I would have created Manifested Harmony, would know about energy healing or the Law of Attraction, would have written 2 books, or would have become nationally recognized for my work to help crime victims (human and animal) on a national level.  I miss my family and friends, but have made new friends and have created a lovely home for myself.

So this 10th anniversary is bittersweet for me but as time goes on it becomes sweeter and I learn more about resiliency. I can honestly say that once I discovered the path of energy healing and Law of Attraction work, that is when my energy shifted and my old energy moved on.
