What’s your animal?

One of my morning visitors

Have you ever heard of animal totems? These are animals who come to us to teach us something or give us a message. In the Shamanic world, we all have at least one animal totem that is special for us for this lifetime. But we also encounter many animal totems or animal guides throughout the day. Most often, people are too busy or distracted to see their animal totem. When you stop multi-tasking and enjoy whatever surrounding you are in, you will see them and can receive their message.

How do you receive their message? When an animal grabs your attention, that is the sign that they have a message for you. You can figure out that message by getting a book on animal totems (I like Steven Farmers Pocket Guide to Spirit Animals), or you can look online for the definition. I like this website (scroll to the bottom to search). Or you can just intuitively look to what the animal naturally represents.

Recently, I have been consistently seeing three animals when I am outside: rabbits, turtles and snails. Rabbits are about creation and things moving in leaps and bounds. I have been in a very creative phase that I feel is starting to take off, so that totem message makes sense to me. Turtle totems are about grounding, slowing down, and working with Earth energy to accomplish things. That definitely sings to me as I have been going non-stop all year and have felt the need for rest and rejuvenation. And the snail totem is about balancing when to trust the outside world and when to protect yourself. This morning, I had three tiny snails on my front porch. I moved them into the bushes in front of my house to keep them safe and within two hours another two were on my porch. They clearly want to get my attention.

Once I learned about animal totems, it really helped me to be in the moment and to not multi task. So when I drive, I enjoy the view; and when I walk or run, I do not have my smart phone or music in my ears but I instead look around for animals that make themselves known to me. Watching for animal totem messages is a good way to slow down and enjoy life.

So for today, be present in what you are doing when you are outside and look for messages that animals send to you. I’d love to hear what they tell you, so feel free to post and share!

All my best,
